Jordan loved to hear his mother tell the story about the day he was born. “I was sick from worry and pain,” his mother remembered, “and I chewed mint leaves and coriander to calm my stomach. When you finally arrived, I felt a rush of love flowing through me. So I named you Jordan, after the gentle river to the east.”
Jordan’s mother was Bethlehem’s expert in the many uses of spices and herbs. Always at her side, the young boy learned the secrets of healing that had been passed down through generations. The many powders and dried leaves in their supply were good at soothing a pain or spicing bland food, and Jordan knew them all.
One day Jordan returned from his synagogue lessons to find his parents scurrying about the house. Pots of dried mint and bay leaves, spicy cumin, cinnamon, and coriander seeds were lined up near the door.
“We are taking a small booth in the marketplace,” explained Jordan’s father. “With so many foreigners here for the Census, we stand to make quite a profit from our merchandise.”
Delighted, Jordan helped his parents put the little containers into baskets for transport to the marketplace. Their booth was small but well placed, just inside the town gate.
Jordan and his parents kept busy all day, talking and joking with customers, giving some a small taste of caraway or cinnamon as proof of their quality, then carefully weighing the spices chosen by the customers. Most everyone walked away with a crock of sweet-smelling treasures and a smiling face.
Late that afternoon, a stranger limped up to the spice market. “Have you anything to soothe a sore foot? I have traveled from very far away, and the remedies I brought with me were used up on the trip.”
With a nod from his mother, Jordan began to work. He rubbed a square of cloth with balm, and then added mint leaves for a cooling effect. Jordan applied the poultice to the man’s foot. The man closed his eyes, and a look of relief came over his face. “It feels better already! Tobias thanks you, young healer!” The stranger tucked the second cloth into his shoe and held out a silver coin.
“I cannot accept such a large payment for such a small service,” Jordan protested.
Tobias bowed, walked briskly to his caravan, and returned in minutes with a small pouch. “Jordan, please accept this gift from me. Frankincense is a special essence used in making fragrances and medicines. It is a gift fit for a king, and also for a generous boy like you.”
