This allows the tree to be above the cats level and they hopefully will lose interest. Placing all wrapped Christmas presents under the tree will block the cats and make it much harder for them to successfully climb your Christmas tree. Since cats dislike the smell of orange peels or rotten apples, you can place some under the tree to make your cat less likely to go near it. People that attend a White Elephant Gift Party Exchange are supposed to bring one wrapped gift. This gift is usually something unusual or even somewhat useless. People put a lot of thought into the trinket, knick knack, or unknown kitchen utensil. Most of the time, the best wrapped gifts are usually the worst ones. People will wrap them up really nice to make them attractive to the eye. Part of the White Elephant Game is usually a series of guesses as to who brought which present, so it is requested not to leave any markings or name tag.
Usually, party goers draw numbers to have an order to which who picks first to last. The gifts are either laid in a central place or under a Christmas tree. The first player picks out the first gift, unwraps it and has to keep it on display for all to see. The second player may either steal the first players gift or pick a new gift from the pile and so on. If a gift is stolen, that person must pick a new gift from the pile. A gift can only be stolen once after a turn. Some White Elephant Parties allow a present to be stolen up to three times. After the third time, the gift is no longer available.
