Christmas in the old Soviet Union, Christmas in the new Russia.
During the Russian Revolution and subsequently, the seventy year rule of Communism, Christianity was suppressed along with Christmas. During this period of rule, the religious celebration of Christmas was replaced by the Festival of Winter. Many traditions associated with Christmas were transferred to the New Year’s holiday. The Christmas tree became a New Year’s Eve Tree. The Christmas dinner became a New Year’s dinner. The Russian equivalent of Santa Claus, Grandfather Frost, now arrived on New Year’s Day. And New Year’s Day became a legal holiday while Christmas was officially ignored.
During the years from 1920 through the late 1980’s, the spirit of Christmas was not entirely eliminated. While the reigning government’s position was atheistic, it occasionally relaxed its restrictions and allowed some religious expressions. Christmas services were still held in all remaining working churches on January 6 which was now Christmas Eve and 7 which was now Christmas Day. Christmas trees which had been banned were again allowed to be erected, decorated and lit. The story goes that Joseph Stalin, then head of the Soviet Union, lifted the ban on Christmas trees in 1935 and decreed that they were now to be re-named New Year’s Trees and declared New Year’s Day a national family holiday. Christmas trees were inexpensive in the Soviet Union and available to all people. Some Russians preferred the artificial trees but most still chose the fir trees because of their natural pine scent. There was always an abundance of fir trees to be found all over Moscow and the countryside.
Another Christmas tradition that was carried over was the legendary Grandfather Frost, the Russian equivalent of Santa Claus, although with a few changes. Now he arrived on New Year’s Day instead of December 25 and dressed in a blue robe rather than the red one. Although it was still the Communist era, parents would hire students or actors to dress up as Grandfather Frost (Santa Claus) and come to their homes bringing gifts for the children. Some children opened gifts on New Year’s Eve while others waited until New Year’s Day to find what Grandfather Frost (Santa Claus) had left for them under the New Year’s tree.

The Life of St. Nicholas.
St. Nicholas was born in Asia Minor, a region that later became the nation of Turkey. Most scholars believe he was born around 280 AD and died around 343. He pursued a religious career and eventually became bishop of Myra, a town in Asia Minor now called Demre. Some believe that he attended the Council of Nicea in 325 AD. This important meeting of the leaders of the early Christian Church produced the Nicene Creed, a fundamental statement of the Christian faith. Other researchers point out that his name does not appear on the roster of those in attendance until the Middle Ages, when his cult was at the height of its popularity. Although next to nothing is known for certain about the saint’s life, many legends credit him with miraculous deeds.
