Tips for hanging Artificial Christmas Garlands: The first thing you should do is measure the area you want to cover with artificial garland. When measuring around windows and doors its best to include the trim molding in your measurement. This will keep the garland from getting caught in the door. Measure your stair rail from the top to the bottom of the stairs. If you plan to wrap the garland around the rail just double or triple your measurement, depending how tight you want the wrap to be. There are many ways to secure the garland to your walls, stairs, or fireplace mantel. It is basically a personal decision. You can use anything from thumbtacks, small finishing nails or tape. It just depends on the surface and finish of the object you are securing the garland to. I do recommend that you not put a hole in your doorway or window trim molding. Instead, if you need to use a nail or thumb tack, use a very skinny one. There are very short and narrow finishing nails available at most hardware stores. You can put them in the wall just above the trim molding at each corner. Wrap a garland tip around the small nail to hold it in place.
Shaping your garland: When you get your new garland home it will be all crunched up. Grab it in the middle and shake it out 3-4 times, this will fluff it out a bit. Its best not to try to shape the garland too much until you have it securely in place. Then you can shape the individual tips the same as an artificial Christmas tree. Simply place your index finger on the end of the tip closest to the center of the garland. Gently push down once with your finger tip, then move your finger back a little and continue until you have given the entire garland tip a gentle bend. Repeat this with as many of the garland tips as you like. Just remember, a plant grows toward light. It would not be natural for a live pine bough to have too many completely straight branch tips. With the exception of the downswept pine variety.
