This hansom hand made deer
is made with brown shades of natural fibers. The deer antlers are bendable so they will not break during shipping or storage. The decorative deer is 14 inches tall, 11.5 inches long and 3.5 inches wide. This light weight 1.2 pound unique deer has realistic black bead eyes with a painted brown nose and hooves. The short cut natural fibers looks just like dear hair. The reindeer’s eyes, ears and tail are highlighted with white natural fibers. A great looking deer for a Christmas or natural outdoor scene.

Reindeer Facts:
The Reindeer is a kind of large deer that lives in the northernmost regions of Europe, Asia and North America. The reindeer, which is closely related to the caribou, is often herded and tamed by nomadic people.
Reindeer differ from most other forms of deer in several ways. Reindeer have larger antlers, larger and wider hoofs and a heavy coat that is grayish brown to almost white. These features help reindeer survive in the cold Arctic. The large hoofs prevent the reindeer from sinking into the snow. Female reindeer are the only kind of female deer except caribou to have antlers. Reindeer often make a variety of noises. When frightened, adults snort and young reindeer bawl. When reindeer walk, their feet make a clicking sound.
In summer reindeer may eat grasses and leaves from willows and birches. In winter they paw through the snow to find lichens to eat. In the short Arctic summers, plants grow slowly and cannot stand much grazing. So reindeer move frequently to a new place when their food becomes scarce. They may migrate several hundred miles or kilometers in a year. They are excellent swimmers and can cross rivers. During migration, several thousand reindeer may gather into on herd. By traveling in herds, individual reindeer are protected from their enemies. Animals that prey on reindeer include wolves, lynxes, wolverines and grizzly bears.
A male reindeer is known as a bull. The female is called a cow. In the fall, the bulls fight with one another to gather their own group of cows. In the spring, a cow usually will bear one offspring, called a calf. After a few days, the calf is strong enough to join the herd. Adult reindeer stand about 3-4 feet high and weigh up to 400 pounds.
Reindeer are very useful to the Lapps of northern Scandinavia. The Lapps are on e of the nomadic people well known for developing much of their way of life around the migrating herds of reindeer. They have trained reindeer to serve as pack animals and to pull sleds and sleighs. They use reindeer skin for boots, clothing and tents. They also drink reindeer milk and kill wild reindeer for meat. In some areas, snowmobiles, trucks, helicopters and two way radios are used to capture and herd the reindeer. Nomads in extreme northern Siberia still herd the reindeer in the old way, following the herds, with their possessions carried on a reindeer pulled sled.

Facts About Horns and Antlers.
A horn is a pointed, bony structure on the heads of many mammals. Most horned animals have a pair of horns. Such animals as cattle, sheep, goats and antelope have true horns. Deer have hornlike growths that are not true horns. These growths are called antlers.
Horns have a bony core. The core is an extension of one of the skull bones. A layer of skin covers the core. This skin contains a protein called keratin that makes the horn extremely though and durable.
Among many horned animals, both the male and the female grow horns. The horns may be elaborately curved, but, with the exception of the pronghorn, they do not form branches as do antlers. Horned animals keep their horns and grow new coverings each year.
Among most antlered animals, only the male grows antlers. The animal sheds its antlers every year. Like horns, antlers grow out of bones in the skull. At first, antlers have a velvet like covering of skin over the bone. Instead of becoming hared, this covering dies and is rubbed off by the animal.
Horns and antlers have a number of functions. They serve as weapons to protect the animals from attack. Male animals sometimes use their horns or antlers to fight other males in the group. Such fighting establishes which male is the most important. More often, a male avoids a fight and establishes his superiority through gestures that may include displaying and threatening to use his horns or antlers.
