Adeste Fideles.
Adeste Fideles is a popular Christmas hymn written by Englishman John Francis Wade at the Catholic College at Douai, in Northern France, probably around 1740-1743. This hymn has long been believed to have been copied by Wade and is sometimes credited to St. Bonaventure, a 13th century Franciscan monk. Most musicologists now agree that Wade is responsible for both the words and the music. This song was written by Don Gardner in 1946 and was a hit in 1948 for Spike Jones and the City Slickers. It was sung in a childs voice by George Rock, one of the Slickers. Danny Kaye, the Andrews Sisterss and Nat King Cole have all recorded it. It became a top ten hit again in 1955 when it was sung by seven year old Barry Gordon. Bells.
The first bells came from China, but all ancient religions and societies used them for their ceremonies. Bells evolved from rattles into the sweet toned silver bells we have today, though the church did not use bells until the 6th century.
