Christmas Bells.
In the United States we tend to associate bells both with emergencies and with such joyous occasions as weddings and Christmas celebrations. This association between bells and Christmas can be traced back to the Middle Ages, when Church officials began to use bells for worship and celebration. Medieval European bell customs, in turn, developed out of a wide array of beliefs and practices associated with bells in ancient times. As Christmas Day progresses, the children of Germany get more and more excited. It is not until after the bells of Christmas ring that they may enter the sitting room where the Christmas tree is decorated and their packages await! Now for the moment for which they have longed! The Wooden Church Crusade.
When Germany was divided after World War ll, Baron Henning Von Royk-Lewinski and Richard Kinzer, the former president of Burlington Mills, founded the Wooden Church Crusade, a charitable organization established to build churches in war torn areas of West Germany. It was their goal to build as many churches as there were American States at that time and when completed their efforts resulted in more than 25 churches being built. They wanted the ringing of the bells in these churches to be a reminder to everyone in the Western communities that with God comes peace, and the bells would also toll loudly enough to give those across the Eastern border hope for such peace. Every church has become a symbol for the solidarity between the United States of America and former Western Germany in the fight against communism and the fight for peace.
