Information on Teaching.
Teaching is the act of giving instruction to others. But there is a sense in which we may say that no one ever taught anybody anything. Learning is an activity of the learner. The most a teacher can do is to try to create the conditions that will help learning go forward.

Informal Teaching.
Teaching is part of everyday life. It is natural for a person to want to bring his knowledge and ideas to others. Most people like to teach. A boy who has learned to curve a baseball will spend happy hours trying to show his friends how to do it. Almost everyone gets pleasure out of helping others to clear up their confusions or correct their misunderstandings. Ordinary conversation, no matter what the subject, includes a great deal of teaching with different people taking turns as teacher.
The informal kind of teaching is in some ways the most effective kind. In the first place, it is undertaken because the learner wants to learn. For example, a man who has just done a good job of painting his own garage may be asked by a neighbor for advice on what kind of paint to by and how to paint his own garage. He gives instruction that is asked for, answering his neighbor’s questions as well as he can and trying to clear up points about which his neighbor is in doubt. He does not have to worry about holding his neighbor’s attention or interest.
On the other hand, he would not think of taking up his neighbor’s time with a long lecture on the chemistry of paint or the history of paint or the occupational diseases of painters. In ordinary life, a person teaches when he is asked to teach. Anyone who insists on instructing those around him, whether they wish to be taught or not, usually finds himself regarded as a bore and a nuisance.

Formal Teaching.
When we speak of teaching, we usually think of schools or colleges. Teaching, like medicine or surgery or the practice of law, has become a separate profession.
Teaching and Learning.
An important part of the teacher’s task is to stimulate thinking and thus to cause learning to develop and advance. Since a person learns by thinking, teaching means getting people to think and helping them to carry forward the thinking process.
Every pupil who comes to school brings with him a great many attitudes, beliefs and ideas which he has formed at home or elsewhere. Teaching means helping a student to organize and clarify these ideas, so that he may come to know what he believes, what he cares about and how he feels toward various matters. Teaching also means questioning some of the pupil’s ideas, so that he can learn to think for himself and answer challenges to his way of thinking. If this process is to be effective, teaching must also include acquainting the child with an extensive body of facts, so that he can adjust his beliefs to the best available knowledge. The teacher here is not concerned so much with the conclusion the pupil may reach, as with his method of reaching it.
Teaching in this sense seeks to establish in pupils the habit of revising their opinions in the light of what they find out.
