Mary
Among the many members of the royal line of Israel… and indeed, a direct descendant of the great King David… was a simple and virtuous girl named Mary. Mary was raised within the close confines of her home, learning all of the tasks other young girls mastered as they prepared to become wives and mothers.
Mary had yet to turn 14 when she had become engaged to Joseph the carpenter. Before the two were married, a miraculous occurrence took place that was to change the direction of their lives. The angel Gabriel appeared before Mary. The young woman was frightened, having never seen an angel. Gabriel calmed her with a soothing voice and told her that she was to have a son. Gabriel’s explanation was filled with joy as he told her that the Child would be the Son of God, and that He would be called Jesus.
When Mary told Joseph of the angel’s coming, he thought, “How could this be?” But then God spoke to him, too. He became a tender and loving husband, comforting her throughout her pregnancy. As Mary’s term was ending, a decree was issued ordering all citizens to their ancestral homes. Mary and Joseph were forced to make a journey to Bethlehem on a frail little donkey… and by the time they reached the village, it was late and there were no rooms to rent in the crowded town. Mary was tired and did not care that the only place available for the night was a simple stable. She did not complain, but rather rode the faithful donkey to the shelter and allowed Joseph to help her into the spacious, cold room. He was concerned about Mary giving birth in such an unseemly place. But Mary simply smiled and prepared herself for the miraculous birth.
As the night wore on, both Joseph and the animals kept watch of the mother-to-be. Suddenly, the stable’s single lantern flickered and went out and in the night air arose a chorus of sweet music. Before Joseph could contemplate finding oil to rekindle the lamp, a wondrous star burst in the sky showering light on Mary. And in her arms, rested the sleeping baby.
