History of Nutcrackers
Nutcrackers have been in use for thousands of years; in fact evidence shows that nutcracking was one of the first chores done by mankind. However, the stereotypical white-bearded, sword-toting nutcracker common to Christmas décor is only one chapter in The Art and Character of Nutcrackers. Nuts have been a significant part of the food supply since the beginning of time, and over the years man has created ingenious ways to open the shells. Excavations of early civilizations have shown nutshells, probably broken by two stones when too hard for the hands or teeth to crack. At first nutcrackers were purely utilitarian, but beautiful ornate brass and wood carved nutcrackers are known to date back to the 15th and 16th centuries. These nutcrackers function like a pair of pliers with two levers that allow the lower jaw to be pushed up against the upper jaw to crack the nut. Nutcrackers of the 19th century originated in the eastern region of Germany. Nutcrackers were produced for generations by these skilled woodcrafters.

Life was tough for many people who worked long hours as miners and endured hardships and poverty. Nutcrackers were cleverly designed to resemble the authoritarian figures of kings, policemen, and soldiers. In old Germany it delighted villagers to see these authoritarian figures doing menial tasks such as cracking nuts!
