Using Christmas Tree Candle Lights

View Our Online Store:  Battery Operated Candles.

Not widely seen in modern times, Christmas tree candle lights are rich in history and tradition. Their natural illuminating light can bring warmth to any holiday display with such minimal cost. Many people are rediscovering this timeless practice both in the traditional manner, as well as in a new modern electric form. No matter what the personal choice and location they are displayed may be, Christmas tree candle lights are one of the more unique ways to share in the holiday cheer.

These decoration icons were introduced during the 17th century by a man by the name of Martin Luther. The tradition was initially to display the candles in a well visible window to show a place where Christians were worshipping. As time passed, other uses were realized and practiced including that of placing them on Christmas trees. Popularity grew throughout the Early Modern Period in Germany and later during the leadership of Queen Victoria in the United Kingdom. Immigration helped in bringing this bright idea to both North America and Australia in the 1800’s. Despite the invention of electricity, it was rather expensive in the beginning which brought staying power to the use of Christmas tree candle lights for many years. While the electric powered bulb strands slowly made their way into homes beginning in the 19th century, to this day there are still those worldwide that utilize the time-honored, powerless decoration.

With utility costs on the rise, many are going back to the use of Christmas tree candle lights both alongside treasured ornaments on their greenery and in their windows during the holidays. Martin Luther was said to melt the bottom of the wax and then affix it to the branch to hold it in place. Nowadays there are safer ways to display this cost effective decoration. Once the perfect illuminators have been chosen to fit the location and look that is desired it is then important to choose candle holders designed for this specific use. There are holders ideal for displaying them in windows, as well as those made for brightening up those tall pieces of nature. For the latter, a few options are available. A standard clip-on model clamps directly to the branch and has the ability to be turned and adjusted as seen fit. They are typically made in a silver or gold tone. The other popular, yet more traditional model is a pendulum design. It was created by Charles Kirchhof in 1867. His invention is made up of a stem that is weighted on one end to balance the actual holder on the branch. It is considered a bit more decorative as its weight is generally a ball or star for an added touch. Each option of holders has the necessary catcher for any dripping wax. It is important to ensure that the Christmas tree candle lights chosen fit snuggly in the holder for the highest level of safety.

As with many time-honored traditions and decorations there are more modern choices as well. There are battery-operated and electric options on the market for those that would rather not have actual flames illuminating their holiday décor. These versions allow for the same ambiance while having the flexibility to be moved and located anywhere from the window to the fireplace hearth without any safety concerns. No matter what style is utilized they are sure to compliment any ornaments and stockings perfectly. They will continue to exhibit an old, yet beautiful holiday tradition for years to come.
